Laundry Day and Date Night

July 7

I managed to get up with Chris for breakfast downstairs, where they make really good omelette to order.  After I said goodbye to Chris, I went back to bed.  I washed two loads of laundry when I got up, cleaning all our clothes from the trip.  I went to put my first load in the dryer and thought, great, it's a front load like our dryer at home, put in the clothes, put in the money, started it and then noticed a lot of water.  That was strange, but I really didn't think too much of it.  I went to put the other load in another dryer and then realized that I hadn't put the first load in the dryer but another washer.  Well...they'll be extra clean.

Chris came back after work and wanted to take me to dinner, so we walked about a mile down to the Copper Onion.  The wait was brief if we sat outside, which was fine with us.  They sat us in the middle of the patio, and pretty quickly, gusts of wind kicked up.  The runners of material stretching over the patio kept making loud noises as the wind made it puff upward.  We decided to split an appetizer and main entree, so we ordered ricotta balls made with lemon, sage, and thyme and browned in butter.  It was so delicious!  Chris loved our carbonara, and I liked it, but not as much as he did.  He loved the egg on top that had a yolk that broke and ran yellow as we mixed up the pasta.  That's what made it for him.

After dinner we walked back the other direction to Bruges Waffles and Frites.  Our diets are out the window. At least we were walking.  We passed by a beautiful Greek orthodox church on the corner, I tried to go in but it was closed. As we neared the park, I saw the station where they rent those green bike out.  I think it's such a clever idea.

The little restaurant was across from a large park and next to another cute dining place.  We went in and I had a hard time deciding, but eventually landed on a cinnamon waffle torpedo (had dark chocolate in the waffle) with strawberries and vanilla ice cream.  Chris got a monster waffle, which was a waffle with a crunchy cookie spread, two scoops of vanilla ice cream for large eyeballs, strawberries and two blueberries for the iris.  It was really very cute and tasted so delicious.  I understand why Chris wants to come here every time he visits Salt Lake City.

We walked back to the hotel and picked up the car to try and catch the sunset off the capitol.  We parked in the same spot, walked across and saw there was a wedding finishing up.  People had formed two lines up the stairs and balloons were being handed out on southern entrance.  A fancy car sat at the bottom of the steps.  We didn't want to wait long, so we walked back to the large patio, but it wasn't as good of clouds for a sunset. We did hear when they cheered the couple walking out and popped their balloons.  Chris watched as a family with the young son came over to the patio.  He saw the kid climb over the railing, which meant he was standing on a ledge that is probably not even a foot wide.  The drop to the ground from there was probably around fifteen feet.  The parents didn't even see the kid, and he climbed back over safely.  Wow...scary.

We explored a little more, walking around the big lion statues that guarded either side of the staircase at the western entrance.  We watched as the sun went down but there was only a hint of pink in the sky.  We went down the staircase to a memorial to the Vietnam veterans.  A nice tree lined bark chip walkway curved outward back to the front lawn of the capitol.  We drove around again past the pretty lights at the City Creek.  We drove down the road and I saw an old fashioned "Union Pacific" sign on what looked like it used to be a train station.  We passed a fancy house as well.  I'm sure there is history here, but I'll have to explore it another day.
