We had a little trouble finding Lexington Green. For some reason the GPS did not want to show us anything that had to do with Revolutionary history (I'm sure it wasn't user error this time either). At one point on the highway this small car caught my eye since it had a wide sign (almost wider than the car itself) that said "School bus" with the lights just like you might see on an actual school bus. I saw that it wasn't as small as I thought, but was a small Mazda minivan. We laughed and Katrina took a picture and, with her quick wit, remarked, "I'm gonna put the words 'budget cut' underneath." That actually wasn't the last one we saw - we spotted a few others, and one was a small four door sedan with the same sign on top. We are still not quite sure how the Massachusetts school system busses their children but we did see a very nice big yellow school bus later on, so we know they have those too!
Well, we stumbled on it eventually after meandering through some Lexington neighborhoods, and jumped out to take pictures. We found the tavern where many of the men met to rally against the British. Then we walked across to the green where there is a tall American flag in the middle. I decided to try to re-enact a battle scene by making gun shapes with my hands. The picture came out looking more like I was trying to do some geeky dance moves! Across the street from one of the corners was a house that had a sign outside marking it as the house that one of the men shot in the battle had dragged himself up to the doorway and died later. Just across from there was an old school house that has the distinction of being the first normal school....or school to prepare teachers. I had Katrina stand in front and make an administrator of discipline pose.
The temperature certainly seemed to be dropping, but we wanted to find the house where John Hancock lived. He and Sam Adams awaited there there the night Paul Revere came to warn of the British. We found it, quickly took our picture and headed back to the car. I am so grateful for my big parka hood - it's amazing how warm that thing keeps me! Putting that up and digging my gloved hands into my coat pockets kept me thawed out. I snapped some more pictures of front doors on the way.
We jumped back in the car and took off for Plymouth to see the rock and anything else there was to see...
