New York, New York

It has been a busy two days! And I love New York. I remember I loved it the first time I came with a group of students about 7 years ago. Over time the memories fade and I had things I wanted to return to do, but that fascination with the city had dimmed.

I arrived in New York about 1:30 in the morning on Thursday. There were few of us left on the train by the time we reached the end of the line at Penn Station. I departed the train with my fellow travelers and took the escalator up to a quiet but not deserted level with food, security, information, etc. I asked where to find a taxi and followed the next level of stairs to the outside. There were still a few people around, and I easily was able to hail a taxi which then took me to Meredith's mom's apartment in the Upper West Side.

It was so nice to see a smiling face (which was definitely to Meredith's credit since it was now 2am and I had awakened her. I paid the taxi and then she helped me inside to a small one bedroom apartment. We stayed up talking and then I took a shower (finally...it felt so nice). I laid down to sleep shortly before 3am and it actually took me a few moments to fall asleep since I was fairly wound up from my adventures.

Meredith awakened me about 9 the that morning so we could begin our fun-filled adventure. It was so nice to put on clean clothes and apply make-up and feel normal again. We left the apartment and headed out. I followed her and barely even paid attention because I simply couldn't take it all in. We headed over to Alice's Tea Cup for breakfast. The place had been recommended to me but I couldn't remember the name, and Meredith had seen in a this place in a magazine regarding the visit of a famous couple's daughter, and when I heard the name I remembered that was what Becky had told me (right Becky?). I was a small little place with Alice in Wonderland artifacts, tea necessities, and children's costumes (such as tiaras and fairy wings). We were sat at a table for two and I ordered the breakfast tea which consisted of a pumpkin scone (yummm), scrambled eggs, vanilla yogurt, and granola. I ordered a pot of black tea that was a vanilla, strawberry and blackberry (I think) flavor. Again, yummmmmm. Meredith ordered blueberry cornmeal pancakes and we shared food. It was the perfect start to our day.

We headed into the subway and took two different trains and then resurfaced to walk down the southern side of Central Park. Meredith pointed out certain buildings to me, and we walked past all the horse-drawn carriages. I took a picture of the Apple Store for Chris (if he were here, we'd be going in). We walked into Bergdorf Goodman's (where I almost didn't make it through the revolving door) and then walked through perusing the clothing...just looking.

Across the street we went to Tiffany's and looked at their jewelry and their home decor/china/crystal. It's amazing how lovely their items are. Meredith described the diamonds as dancing when one passes by which is exactly what they do. The sparkling of those diamonds is pure radiance.

We walked in and went up a few levels of Trump Tower. The water wall is quite lovely in there. On our way out it began to rain. It continued enough that we bought umbrellas - mine clear with a yellow band at the bottom, a yellow handle, and a yellow tip.

Meredith bought the same in a light blue. I just chose that one because I thought it was cute. After using it, I was glad because the clear material allowed me to still see up which is important since New York demands you look up.

We walked past the Lincoln Center, Rockefeller Center and stopped into St. Patricks, which is an absolutely beautiful cathedral. We spoke for some time inside and then left to get to Times Square to see about purchasing half off tickets for a Broadway show.

The line hadn't moved yet due to it wasn't yet 3pm, but we decided that there wasn't a show we wanted to see badly enough to wait in that line. Meredith had recommended we do a dance show in the village, so we opted for that one. Her mother was kind enough to buy them for us, so we continued on our merry way down to Greenwich Village.

We passed by Jeckyl and Hyde where my students and I had eaten dinner up coming to New York before watching Chicago. We continued to McNulty's Tea and Coffee, which has been around well over 100 years.
We stopped in for a snack at Rocco's where I had a pistachio meringue and a mini cannoli (YUMMMMM) and part of Meredith's black and white cookie.

After there, we continued into SoHo, stopping in a gallery where the most interesting pieces I saw were manipulating light. The artist, who was there, cut into the glass and then the light shining through the left a reflection on the wall, words or design. One in particular I thought was really nice.

We did stop into Anthropologie just because we are both such big fans...We had to make a decision at this point to just stay down there in SoHo for the show or go back up to the apartment and change, but in the end, I decided it would be nice to change and put on jacket. Back to the subway we went, but by this point the tunnels were nasty and warm, filled with sweaty people.

At the apartment I changed and grabbed my jacket the three of us (Meredith and her mom and myself) headed back down to the Joyce Theater to watch Pilobolus.

We stopped quickly for some Starbucks across the street and then it was time for the dancing, which was incredibly fascinating and original.

Back onto the subway, and Meredith's mom left us and we decided to go get some dinner. We walked down Broadway and in through the gates of Columbia. We came back out and decided Cuban food was our dinner for the night, live Cuban style music included. We sat on the patio and had a charming waiter who helped us pick out two delicious meals which we split.

We walked back around midnight to the apartment and readied the portable beds.

I will have to write about my second full day in NY tomorrow because tonight I am exhausted!
