A Song to Ponder

There are a few songs that I just love because of the words. I love the melody as well, but this song has stuck with me through the years since I first heard it at Simpson as one of my all time favorites. I wanted to share the words with you. I'm spending some time this morning thinking about them. What do they mean? Do I mean them? I want to say yes, and at times I can say yes, but not all the time. I find I am happiest when I can say yes to this.

Things of this world do not make us happy - they cannot, they are things. Things fade, things go away. Even relationships with people change, fade, pass on, hurt us at times. If we put our hope, trust, and joy in things of this world we will always have anxiety knowing they can go away and we have no control over them or they leave us empty. It's not to say we can't enjoy them or treasure meaningful relationships or things, but what is unshakeable, unbreakable, and undying? When my focus shifts to that which is made up of these things I find my peace and my joy.

Knowing You Jesus

All I once held dear, built my life upon
All this world reveres and wars to own,
All I once thought gain, I have counted loss
Spent and worthless now, compared to this

Knowing You, Jesus, knowing You
There is no greater thing
You're my all, You're the best,
You're my joy, my righteousness
And I love You, Lord

Now my heart's desire is to know You more
To be found in You and known as Yours
To possess by faith what I could not earn
All surpassing gift of righteousness

Knowing You, Jesus, knowing You
There is no greater thing
You're my all, You're the best,
You're my joy, my righteousness
And I love You, Lord

***So not knowing who actually penned these lyrics I looked it up and it is by Graham Kendrick, who based it on the passage in Philippians 3:7-11.
